::Vancouver Half Ironman 2013::

This is why I love this race.

This is why I love this race.

This was my third time I’ve raced this one, and really enjoy all aspects of the race. Living out in Abbotsford makes the bike drop a little annoying with about 3 hours driving out and back just to drop it off for the race, but once Sunday morning comes I’m always happy to toe the line.

I’m assuming the 6:30 early start has something to do with tides and road closures, but that 3:45 wake up gives me flash backs of the St. George Ironman. Going into this race, I was feeling pretty good. Wasn’t doing much training since doing Ironman Couer D”alene 3 weeks earlier. After finishing up Ironman CDA, I felt like I didn’t push as hard as I could. This race would be used as a true marker of my fitness. Looking at past results, and was hoping to push a 4:20 or less.

Everything ended up working pretty well, after some serious swim smashin this was the first race that I didnt have to mess with a brake or bike computer, or deal with something on the bike. Everything went smooth. I would just race on feel, like how the swim goes. Get in and go, the garmin was set up for 22.5 loops on the bike, for some basic input on how things where working. Other then that I just let the legs decide everything. As usual it took me a loop or two to get them going. Every Loop on the bike got faster, with almost a 2 minute difference from the first to the last. I felt like I could have hammered down a bit more but with all the no passing zones, it seemed like any work you do to get ahead got smashed down. The run almost went the same way, with the garmin set for 1 mile check ins. Starting out on the run was tough with some super stiff back muscles from having to pee on the bike. Once that got finally went away by about mile 3 or 4, things were feeling pretty fresh. At mile 6-7 would be my worry point and see if I would start to feel the ironman from 3 weeks ago, but I actually start to feel pretty good. I was hoping to get my splits down in the 6:20-30 range but was almost holding 6:40. I think that its just a matter of some off season work to get those splits.

Coming at 4:20, I was pretty happy, and felt I had made some gains from last year. After finishing Couer D’alene with about 10-20 off what I wanted, this race give me an idea of where my fitness is really at.

I'm guessing 90km in this outfit is Badnews Bears
