Lake Samish 2015- 6.5 miler

This is almost a staple in my training year after year.  I love the timing of this race, mostly because it keeps you honest over the holidays.  I never do as well as I planned and it always sheds light on how much work is ahead for goals set for the rest of the year.  Normally I go for the half marathon (two loops of the lake.) but with the new addition to the family, and trying to ease into the season, it just wasn’t a good idea.

This was taken a few years back, but looked no different in 2015.

This year, like many, the day starts out a little ugly in the morning, but once you get to the race venue it just seems to sheltered by the mountains.  The temperature doesn’t get to bad and the heavy rains staying away, which in turn, made for a pretty good day for a smash.  A little group of us left Abbotsford about 8:30, got through the border and to the Lake just outside Bellingham around 9:20.  We sat in the car til about 20 minutes to 10 o’clock and then ran 2 miles for a warm up for the 10:15 start time.  (10:00am for the half marathon.)  We grabbed our race chip with no issues, (numbers seemed a little lower this year.) and set off at 10:15.

Their were a few bunny rabbits in the 6.5 miler but our little Canadian group held our own and all came in the top 15. They had a pretty nice spread for finishing racers in the Ranger sack and after we grabbed some food, we jumped in the first van back up to the the parking lot and headed back to Canada.

Chipped race, with mile markers every mile for both the 6.5 and half marathon, with a nice little price tag of 20 bucks.  As every year, I wished all races did this.  You can buy a shirt if you like, if you don’t want one…you don’t get one.  Greater Bellingham Running Club puts it on and also redesigned their logo too, shirts looked pretty good this year.
