::Deception Pass 50km 2013::

December 15, 2013 I’ll be heading down for a short trip down South for a new challenge, a race called the Deception Pass25/50km.  I’ve done a few good training weekends down in the area of Deception pass over the last few years and have always wanted to go get dirty in the trails. Thanks to Rainshadow running I’ll be able to do that, and might have to get dirty on a few others later on in the year too.

I originally was thinking about doing the 25km but after taking too long to decide it sold out, so the 50km it is!  Really looking forward to the challenge and seeing how the body holds up.  Going into this race the temps have been super cold on the coast with -2 to -6 plus a little wind.  On my long runs I’ve tried out a few different layers to see what works the best but the long range forecast is looking like its going back to the wet stuff.

I'll be sporting the compressort full socks and trail shirt. I've done my last two long runs in these socks and they are perfect. Feet are warm too in -7.

One of the best buys I did a few years back was thermal underwear with a wind block in the important areas. I'll also have a wind breaker and a longer short with a liner.

Coming from a ski and skiing touring background, layering is pretty important and I feel trail running is no different.  Light, comfortable and warm will be pretty important for this race to go well, of course fueling too!

First day out with this was a 3 hr 30 minute run, no problems at all.

Bat belt

I’ll be going with a nathan fuel system belt with 2 9oz bottles and a spot to stack up about 7-8 gels in between the bottles.  Used it on a few long runs and pretty happy with how it fits.  Haven’t raced since the first week in September, so I’m getting a little bouncy.
